Place and style the chat
By default, once switched on, Answer Desk shows a chat button in the bottom right corner of every page. You change where and how it looks on Answer Desk > Appearance, or you put the chat inside a page with the [answer_desk] shortcode.
The Appearance screen
On the right, a Preview shows the real chat window with the saved settings. Click Save changes to refresh it.
Name and logo
- Title in the chat header: leave empty to use your site name.
- One line under it: for example "Usually answers in a few seconds". Do not promise a human here.
- Logo (Pro): click Choose to pick a square image of at least 80 pixels from the media library.
Colour and type
- Accent colour: used for the header, the button and the visitor's messages. Text on top is set to black or white automatically so it stays readable.
- Type (Pro): The same as the site, or a system sans serif, serif, rounded or monospace font. All are fonts already on visitors' devices; nothing is downloaded.
- Text size: 12 to 20 pixels, default 15.
- Corner rounding: 0 (square) to 28, default 16.
Where it appears
- Corner: Bottom right or Bottom left. Check that a cookie banner or back-to-top button is not in the same corner.
- Words on the button (Pro): two or three words such as "Ask us anything". Empty shows the icon alone.
- Pages it appears on (Pro): see below.
Options marked Pro are saved only while a licence or the trial is active.
Show it only on some pages (Pro)
- Under Pages it appears on, choose Every page, Only the pages listed below or Every page except those listed below.
- In the box, write one address per line, without the domain. For example
contactorsupport/returns. - End a line with a star to cover everything below it:
shop/*matches every page in the shop. - Click Save changes.
The most common rule is keeping the chat off the checkout page, for example Every page except those listed below with checkout.
Put the chat inside a page
A shortcode is a short code in square brackets that WordPress replaces with content. To show the chat as a box inside a page instead of a floating button:
- Edit the page.
- Add a Shortcode block (in the block editor, click the plus button and search for "Shortcode").
- Type
[answer_desk]. - Update or publish the page.
| Attribute | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
height | 520 | Height of the chat box in pixels, from 300 to 900. Example: [answer_desk height="600"] |
The shortcode shows nothing while the assistant is switched off on Start here. The floating button and the shortcode can both be used on the same site; page rules apply to the floating button.
