Install the free version

You install Answer Desk by uploading its zip file in your WordPress admin and clicking Activate Plugin. It takes about two minutes, and nothing appears on your site until you switch the chat on yourself.

1. Download the zip

  1. Open the Answer Desk product page and download the free version.
  2. You get a file called something like answer-desk.zip. Do not unzip it. WordPress needs the zip file itself.

On a Mac with Safari: Safari may unzip downloads automatically, and you end up with a folder instead of a zip. To stop this, open Safari > Settings > General and untick Open "safe" files after downloading, then download again. If you already have the folder, right-click it in Finder and choose Compress "answer-desk": this creates a new zip you can upload.

2. Log in to WordPress

  1. Go to yoursite.com/wp-admin (replace yoursite.com with your own address).
  2. Log in with an administrator account.

3. Upload and activate

  1. In the left menu, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  2. Click Upload Plugin at the top of the page.
  3. Click Choose File and pick the answer-desk.zip file you downloaded.
  4. Click Install Now.
  5. When WordPress says the plugin is installed, click Activate Plugin.

Where to find it

A new item called Answer Desk, with a speech bubble icon, appears in the left admin menu, just above Appearance. Under it you find Start here, Knowledge, AI provider, How it answers, Appearance, Conversations, Rules and privacy, Licence (Free) and More from NOP Digital.

If something goes wrong

  • "The link you followed has expired": the zip is larger than the upload limit of your hosting. Ask your host to raise the maximum upload size, then try again.
  • "Destination folder already exists": a copy of Answer Desk is already installed. WordPress offers Replace current with uploaded: click it to install the new copy over the old one. Your settings and documents are kept.
  • "Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error": your server most likely runs a PHP version older than 7.4. Ask your host to switch the site to PHP 7.4 or newer.
