Keep restricted content out of lists, search and the REST API

Blocking a page does not remove its title from blog lists, category pages, the site search or the REST API. Step 5 Outside the page itself of a rule (Pro) removes restricted content from those places too.

The options

  • Keep it out of archives, category pages and any list of posts: the content disappears from blog pages, category and tag pages, and other lists, for anyone the rule stops. Content hidden from lists is hidden from the site search too.
  • Keep it out of the site search results: the content does not show up when a stopped visitor uses your site search.
  • Keep it out of the REST API: the REST API is an address (/wp-json/) where WordPress gives out your content as data for apps. Without this option, a restricted post can be read in full at /wp-json/wp/v2/posts. With it, restricted items are removed from lists and a request for a single restricted item gets an error.

Tick the options you want and click Save rule.

Excerpt shown in lists

An excerpt is the short summary shown in lists. The box Excerpt shown in lists sets the text used where the content is listed but not open. Leave it empty and the message from step 4 is used.

Good to know

  • These options do not apply to a rule that covers The whole site: hiding everything from every list would empty the site.
  • They are Pro options. In the free version the boxes are disabled; anything you ticked during the trial is kept and works again when a licence is active.
