Install the free version

You install Content Gate by uploading its zip file in your WordPress admin, then clicking Activate Plugin. It takes about two minutes and you do not need FTP or any technical tool.

1. Download the zip

1. Open the Content Gate product page and download the free version.
2. You get a file called something like content-gate.zip. Do not unzip it. WordPress wants the zip file itself.

2. Log in to WordPress

1. Go to yoursite.com/wp-admin (replace yoursite.com with your own address).
2. Log in with an administrator account.

3. Upload and activate

1. In the left menu, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
2. Click Upload Plugin at the top of the page.
3. Click Choose File and pick the zip you downloaded.
4. Click Install Now.
5. When WordPress says the plugin is installed, click Activate Plugin.

Where to find it

A new Content Gate item with a padlock icon appears in the left admin menu, between Users and Tools. Inside it you find:

• Rules: where you write and order your rules.
• Settings: four options valid for every rule.
• Licence (Free): the plan in brackets changes to show your current plan. Here you start the trial or enter a licence key.

The plugin installs empty on purpose. Until you write a rule, your site looks exactly as before. Next step: write your first rule.

If something goes wrong

• "The link you followed has expired": the zip is bigger than the upload limit set by your hosting. Ask your host to raise the upload limit, then try again.
• "Destination folder already exists": a copy of Content Gate is already installed. WordPress offers Replace current with uploaded: click it to install the new copy over the old one. Your rules and settings are kept.
• "Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error": usually the PHP version of your hosting is older than 7.4. Ask your host to switch the site to PHP 7.4 or newer.
