Getting started

Translate turns your WordPress site into a multilingual one. Each language gets a real address, such as /en/ or /de/, and the text is translated by DeepL, Google Cloud Translation or Claude with your own key.

1. Install the plugin

  1. Download the free version from the Translate product page. Do not unzip it.
  2. In your WordPress admin go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, click Upload Plugin, choose the zip and click Install Now.
  3. Click Activate Plugin. A Translate item appears in the left menu.

2. Choose the languages

  1. Open Translate, tab Languages.
  2. Check that Language of the site is the language your pages are written in. Those pages keep the addresses they have now.
  3. Under Translate the site into, pick as many languages as you like. More than 40 are available. The screen shows where your home page will be in each language.

3. Add a translation key

In the Engine tab, choose DeepL, Google or Claude and paste your key. If you do not have one yet, see Getting an API key. Click Test the saved key to translate one sentence and check that everything works.

4. Open /en/

Open yoursite.com/en/ (or the code of any language you chose). The first visit to a page sends its text to the service; from then on the translation comes from your database. To translate every page in advance, see Translate the whole site.

No change to .htaccess is needed, and it works with any theme and with Gutenberg, Elementor and Divi.
