Install the free version

You install Google Drive Portal by uploading its zip file to WordPress. It takes about two minutes and you do not need FTP or any technical tool.

1. Download the zip

  1. Open the Google Drive Portal product page and download the free version.
  2. You get a file ending in .zip. Do not unzip it. WordPress needs the zip file exactly as it is.

On a Mac with Safari: Safari may unzip downloads automatically and leave you a folder instead of a zip. To avoid it, open Safari > Settings > General and untick Open "safe" files after downloading, then download again. If you already have a folder, right-click it in Finder and choose Compress: this creates a new zip you can upload.

2. Upload it to WordPress

  1. Log in to your WordPress admin. The address is usually yoursite.com/wp-admin.
  2. In the left menu, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  3. Click the Upload Plugin button at the top of the page.
  4. Click Choose File and pick the zip you downloaded.
  5. Click Install Now.
  6. When WordPress says the plugin was installed, click Activate Plugin.

3. Where to find it

A new item called Drive Documents appears in the left admin menu. Click it to open the plugin page, which guides you through three steps. In the list at Plugins > Installed Plugins you also find a Settings link under Google Drive Portal that opens the same page.

If something goes wrong

  • "The link you followed has expired." The zip is larger than the upload limit of your hosting. Ask your host to raise the maximum upload size (upload_max_filesize and post_max_size), then try again.
  • "Destination folder already exists." A copy of the plugin is already installed. WordPress offers Replace current with uploaded: click it to install the new version over the old one. Your settings are kept.
  • "Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error." Your site probably runs a PHP version older than 7.4. Ask your host to switch to PHP 7.4 or newer (8.1 or newer is a good choice).
  • "Two copies of this plugin are installed." You still have the old copy in the folder lr-drive-portal. Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins, deactivate and delete the old Google Drive Portal, then reload the page. This is safe: the settings, the service account key and the licence have a backup copy and are restored automatically, even though deleting the old copy removes its data.
