Which redirect to choose
| Type | When to use it |
|---|---|
| 301 Moved permanently | The page has a new address for good. Search engines move the ranking to the new address. The right choice almost always. |
| 302 Moved temporarily | The page will come back, for example during a promotion or maintenance. Search engines keep the old address. |
| 307 Temporary, keeps the method | Like 302, but a form sent to the old address is sent again to the new one. Useful for forms and API addresses. |
| 410 Gone | The page will not come back and has no replacement. Visitors see the 404 page of your theme, and search engines remove the address sooner than with a 404. |
Browsers remember a 301: after changing one, test in a private window.
