Getting started
Redirects sends visitors and search engines from an old address of your site to the new one, adds a redirect by itself when a published page changes address, and keeps a log of the addresses that answer “page not found”. Everything runs inside WordPress: no .htaccess to edit.
1. Install the plugin
- Download the Redirects zip from My licences. Do not unzip it.
- In WordPress go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, click Upload Plugin, choose the zip and click Install Now, then Activate Plugin.
- A Redirects item appears in the left menu.
2. Add the first redirect
- Open Redirects. In Old address write the part after the domain, for example
/old-page. A full address of your site works too. - In New address write a page of your site (
/new-page) or a full address of another site. - Leave Type on Moved permanently (301) and click Add redirect. It works at once: open the old address in a private window to check.
3. Let the 404 log fill up
From now on, every address that answers “page not found” appears in Redirects > 404 log. Come back after a few days: the most visited ones are the first to fix. See The 404 log.
